ChineseLantern.co.uk is owned and operated by Blueflake Ltd.

We took over the website from it's old owners in March 2011 after being in the lantern business ourselves since January 2010. Although the company is run company from our offices in Manchester and our warehouse in the Lake District, we own our own manufacturing facility in the Far East. At any time we carry around 150,000 lanterns in stock in the UK ready for immediate dispatch.

Managed by TV Cameraman Chris Burton (who credits include Phoenix Nights, League Of Gentlemen, Most Haunted to name but a few), we first spotted Sky Lanterns at a New Year celebration. As hundreds floated over the night sky welcoming in the New Year, we thought that this amazing product should be available to the masses in Europe. Looking round at the time, they were difficult to get hold of, despite fireworks being available almost anywhere!

We set about sourcing a manufacturer to make them for us and created our own brand. Not content with simply ordering in stock, we spent months designing improvments on regular Chinese Sky Lanterns.

Those months invested paid off, and we are now one of the only companies to be given the thumbs up by UK Trading Standards. Our lanterns are fully flame proofed, our  fuel cell is non-drip  and is suspended by a fully bio-degradable fireproof wool (which unlike some competitors contains no metal or asbestos).

We were the first UK lantern company to include clear safety and launch instructions with full photographs with every lantern and are proud of our eco-credentials - which we've had since day 1!

in May 2011 invested in our own manufacturing facilities in the Far East and we continue to grow with our unique Giant Lanterns and our beautiful range of Earth Lanterns.

A brief Sky Lanterns history lesson

There are many different names for the Chinese Lanterns, you have Sky Lanterns which has become a well recognised term within the market. You also have Paper Lanterns which can be more associated with indoor Hanging Lanterns, but due to the paper material used on our products this too has become a popular name. The oldest term however is Khoom Fay Lanterns.

Sky Lanterns originate from Chinese and Thai cultures, used at one point for lighting up the night sky and providing a helpful guide for journey men. While the Chinese Lantern has become a fashionable party product it was actually the first ever mobile light source. Delving deeper into their history it's interesting to know that Sky Lanterns where used to demonstrate artwork, the artists skill lied in their uniqueness of his or her lantern, whether it be in the beautiful colours or in an unusual shape. You can still see these Fascinating works of art at the world famous Lantern Festival.
